2015 Toyota Prius vs 2015 Kia Optima Hybrid

Hybrid vehicles have come a long way in North America since they were first introduced fifteen years ago in 2000. Millions and millions of hybrid vehicles in all different shapes and sizes have been purchased from numerous different manufacturing companies, but perhaps none have reached quite the popularity of that very first hybrid, the Toyota Prius. Many have tried to achieve what the Prius did, but none have succeeded quite as completely as the Prius did. This month we’re taking another look at the Prius compared to another big time hybrid vehicle, with the 2015 Toyota Prius vs 2015 Kia Optima Hybrid.

Advantages of the Toyota Prius

If you’ve ever seen a Prius, then we’re sure you noticed its unique, signature look. It isn’t shaped quite like a regular sedan, but rather it takes on a more rounded shape with a bigger back end. Thanks to that unique look, the Prius has more than double the cargo capacity of the regularly-shaped Kia Optima Hybrid. The Kia does, however, have a size advantage of its own in how big the interior is by having a bit more space for passengers to stretch out in than the Prius.

But where the Prius really shows its strengths, to no one’s surprise, is in the fuel economy department. Toyota is well known for its impressive fuel economy brand-wide, but its hybrid vehicles take efficiency to a whole other level. The 2015 Toyota Prius has a city fuel economy of 4.6 l/100km, an unprecedented number, and highway doesn’t trail far behind with 4.9 l/100km. That translates to needing 2 less litres per 100 kilometres through city streets, and 1 less litre on the highway. That’s unbelievable efficiency virtually unmatched by any vehicle, or at least we haven’t found a viable competitor as of yet.
