2016 Toyota Corolla vs 2016 Mazda3
Just because the Corolla is the best-selling vehicle of all time, doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of stiff competition out there for it. We wanted to measure up the newest version of the compact car against one of its most popular competitors, so we compared the 2016 Toyota Corolla vs 2016 Mazda3, and the Corolla certain got a run for its money. The Mazda3 was completely renovated for the 2016 model year, leaving the Corolla at a two-year disadvantage in that department, so the Mazda3 actually had some advantages over the Corolla. But let’s take a closer look at four of the more important aspects.
Advantages of the 2016 Toyota Corolla
For starters, space. It’s more important than you might think in a compact sedan. You might not “need” as much space as you would in an oversized sport utility vehicle, but the more space you have in the desired tiny vehicle the better. Just because you want a small vehicle, doesn’t mean you want to be scrunched up and squished. So it’s still important for engineers to provide as much space as possible, both in terms of cargo capacity and passenger volume.
The Corolla definitely has a leg up in these areas, though not a huge one. Its trunk can accommodate 0.6 cu. ft. more of your stuff, which might be enough for a small suitcase or backpack, but it’d be a tight squeeze. In the cabin, however, the Corolla provides an extra 1.8 cu. ft. of space, which allows you and your passengers to stretch out quite a bit more than in the 2016 Mazda3. The Mazda sedan does fire back by providing 23 extra horsepower, but that advantage is cut down a bit by the Corolla weighing 75 lbs. less.
