2016 Toyota RAV4 vs 2016 Mazda CX5

2016 Toyota RAV4 vs 2016 Mazda CX5

The RAV4 has been a staple of the Toyota lineup for over two decades now, having originally been introduced in 1994 as one of the first crossover utility vehicles on the market. Now 21 years later it’s one of the most popular compact crossovers in the industry, but just one part of a fairly crowded segment. So we thought we’d take a look at it in comparison to one of its competitors to see just how well it measures up, by pitting the 2016 Toyota RAV4 vs 2016 Mazda CX5, a crossover that is considerably younger having just been introduced in 2012.

Advantages of the 2016 Toyota RAV4

Taking a look at the table above, it’s obvious that while the Mazda is certainly a comparable crossover it just isn’t quite as impressive as the Toyota. Starting at the top, the RAV4 delivers 21 horsepower more than the CX5. That’s not a huge advantage but it will deliver a slightly more enjoyable driving experience thanks to those few extra ponies. Space is where the Toyota crossover really takes it to the next level though.

Behind the back row in the dedicated cargo area alone, the 2016 Toyota RAV4 offers 38.4 cubic feet of space, which is 4.3 cu. ft. more than the 2016 Mazda CX5. That’s not a huge different, but when you drop the back seats down it opens up even more space. And here, the RAV4 offers nearly 10 cu. ft. extra, a sizeable advantage. If you’re not worried about carting around cargo, but rather simply traveling with a full car of passengers, then you can rest easy knowing that the Toyota offers 2.4 extra cu. ft. of space for them to stretch out and get comfortable in, which your taller friends will certainly thank you for.
