Chevy Camaro Z28 Motor Trend‘s Best Driver’s Car
Motor Trend is a world renowned automobile industry magazine dedicated to bringing the best information to drivers and car enthusiasts everywhere. Every year for the past seven, they put on a test to determine the Best Driver’s Car from a pool of all new vehicles, or those who went through major enhancements, in the twelve months prior to the test. This year, General Motors finally took the prize as the Chevy Camaro Z28 was named Motor Trend’s Best Driver’s Car.
Since the award was created in 2007, it has been dominated by Porsche who was only overthrown in 2008 and 2011 by an Audi and Ferrari respectively. Meaning that this year marks the first time a North American-brand car has won the title. The winner is determined by the editors of Motor Trend putting all of the vehicles through objective and subjective tests. From digitally instrumented laps at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, to high-speed driving up and down a 7 km hill climb, the vehicles are put through rigorous testing to make sure they fit the bill.
General Motors was obviously very excited about their vehicle winning the prestigious award, but even more so because when they set out to create the new Z28 Camaro they were planning on creating “the most capable, best-handling Camaro in [their] history,” to which being named the Best Driver’s Car exemplifies. The Camaro has always been one of the hottest sports cars on the market, and a front runner in the pony wars for a long time. This newest incarnation can come with a 7.0L V8 engine that delivers 505 horsepower and 481 lb-ft of torque, something that would get any driver excited.
Motor Trend had this to say after performing the tests on the Chevrolet Camaro Z28:
“The transformation of the fifth-generation Camaro from ‘muscle car that handles pretty well’ to Best Driver’s Car winner is astounding. You feel the superior engineering in how the car responds to inputs both internal and external. From within, the car reacts immediately and precisely to your commands but doesn’t punish your mistakes. From the outside, the Z/28’s suspension attacks bumps and dips with an unbridled passion for keeping the tires on the pavement.”
