Toyota Urban Utility Concept
Toyota is constantly making innovations in the automobile industry. They seemingly pump out more concept vehicles than any other automobile manufacturer out there. Some of them come to fruition (crossing our fingers that the FT-1 is one of those), some of them lead to innovative technologies sprouting up in their other vehicles, and some of them the public are just not receptive to yet. Last month, Toyota’s North American design studio Calty Design Research developed the Toyota Urban Utility concept, a new vehicle that has certainly turned heads.
The California-based research company has been focusing on more urban vehicle conceptualizations to match the increase in innovation and entrepreneurship found in urban areas. They set out to design a vehicle that has the maneuverability of a car, utility of a truck, space of a cargo van, while also hitting other things important to the modern driver like great fuel economy and ease of loading and unloading. They came up with the Toyota U2, one of the most functional vehicles we’ve ever seen.
The exterior is designed to maneuver in an urban setting, fending off traffic, potholes, and sharp turns with ease. It was also designed to be just as useful as the interior, featuring roof panels that retract, rear glass that slides into the tailgate, a tailgate that folds all the way down into a ramp, and protective, replaceable ridges on said tailgate, and side rear-windows that fold open for easy access. It features an extremely modern design that is exciting and fun to look at, with a boxy yet sporty appearance.
But the interior is where things get truly weird, but incredible at the same time. It is completely customizable, so that you can outfit the interior exactly how you want and need it to be set up. Designed to sate the urban appetite for adventure, you can hold all kinds of different gear and equipment in the vehicle. The focal point of the cargo areas is a retractable utility bar that can serve a plethora of uses from holding your groceries to holding a bike. The interior features include this versatile utility rail system that is completely configurable to your needs, the ability to fold and remove front and rear passengers seats, and a retractable latching system that can strap down anything from boogie boards to snowboards.
You’ll also have the option to choose from a wide selection of colors and materials so that you get exactly the vehicle that you want. The last incredible design feature in the U2 is a brand new unique shifter design with intuitive switches for parking, drive and reverse mode. Needless to say, we are incredibly excited for more information about this innovative new concept car, and will keep you updated if more information becomes available.
