Heritage of the Honda Accord
The Honda Accord is the second oldest vehicle on the Honda lineup, but perhaps the most important to Honda’s North American heritage. The very first year that the Accord was introduced and made available happened to be during the 200th anniversary of the creation of the United States of America, and the 100th anniversary of the creation of Canada. We’re going to take a look at the heritage of the Honda Accord, at this great model and what it has done for the Honda brand.
The first generation, while we might think it looks pretty strange today, had an intelligent size and great fuel economy for the era. It was a bestseller through the ‘70s and really helped establish the incredible vehicle. The second-generation, in 1982, became the first Honda vehicle to be created in North America as Honda originated in Japan. 1986 marked the beginning of the third generation, and a brand new look for the Honda Accord. It was much more slim, and took a sportier look thanks to another vehicle in the lineup’s success.
Up until the fourth generation in 1990, the Honda Accord had been a compact car but with this generational switch it became classified as a mid-size sedan, getting more space and power from a 2.2L engine. Then the fifth gen Accord, in 1994, really began to hammer home Honda’s synonymity with vehicle safety. It offered an abundance of standard safety features like dual front airbags, plus its interior was much more ergonomic than ever before.
1998 saw the beginning of the sixth generation Honda Accord, and it saw a much more distinct separation between the sedan and coupe models. The sedan was the largest it had ever been, and the coupe received its own appearance package setting it apart from the other model with a sportier look, and coupe-exclusive front fascia, wheels, and lights. Then in 2003 the seventh generation got even bigger, more powerful, yet also more refined, and was blowing up the 10Best list in Card & Driver. In the middle of the generation, 2005 to be exact, the Accord Hybrid was introduced.
The eighth generation, starting in 2008, saw another class change as the Accord grew in size again, thus enter the full-size car segment. It offered luxury, more features, and even more impressive fuel efficiency due to various features and technologies. The just a couple of years ago the Honda Accord entered its current generation, the ninth. The new Honda Accord is more luxurious than it has ever been, featuring a plethora of technologies, features, and updates to style and performance.
