Hybrid vehicles seem to be the immediate future of the market. They’ve been increasing in popularity tenfold over the past couple of decades since they were first introduced, and now there are more available on the market than ever before, including several from Toyota alone. But many people are still skeptical about hybrid technology, which is why we thought we’d share this story about how hybrid vehicles help the police, rather than just repeating the tried and true “it’ll save you money and the environment.”
Of course, that’s still the moral of this story, just using slightly different flavor to tell it. But even the police in this story, which takes place in the US city of Arkadelphia, Arkansas, were skeptical at first. Like veteran Arkadelphia officer Don Cleek, who said he was “dead set against it, [because] to [him] a police car’s supposed to be rear wheel drive, V8 and can go through ditches.” Generally speaking, none of those things apply to the 2016 Toyota Camry Hybrid.
In spite of many officers thinking it was the wrong decision, Arkadelphia city manager Jimmy Bolt and Chief of Police Al Harris decided to give a troop of 10 Camry Hybrid models a try, and the department hasn’t looked back since. Not only do the Camry Hybrids save the environment by getting the far less efficient Crown Victorias off the road, they’re saving the city 3% of its budget and still catching the bad guys.
In fact, the quietness of the hybrid powertrain sometimes even allowed them to better sneak up on said bad guys. So all in all, even police departments are beginning to turn to hybrid vehicles, so there’s no reason you shouldn’t give one a try.
